The Ghost Writer

It had me in the first 6.5/8ths. Had me in the way sometimes, when I’m really hungry, I can eat most of a chocolate bar before I start to feel sick. I was hungry for horror this fall, and I’d literally never heard of Slasher before, so I decided to give it a shot, and it’s beloved by Reddit. The first red flag.

This show is bad. But for the first six episodes, I was pretty convinced it was the type of bad that’s good: horrible acting, gory, senseless deaths, completely unrealistic drama — but then, SPOILER, they made the most predictable and least interesting person the serial killer, ignoring plot holes and sense in the process. 

And then..??? I waited until the bitter end for an answer that never came, despite the show dangling it in my face the entire season. Why did Tom kill Sarah’s parents? (Well, her mom and her mom’s husband, as she so eloquently puts it after a token, pained, eye-squinting silence). Sarah asks probably upwards of six million times the real reason. And we know he’s her father, which is fine, but it just isn’t good enough for me. We aren’t ever given a satisfying answer as to why a priest (pastor? idk), who caves and has sex with a married woman, brutally and shamelessly butchers two people, with no leadup whatsoever. 

The last episode was so infuriating and filled with plotholes and unanswered questions otherwise (why would Sarah stab Cam in that shed? What was her plan? And are we to assume she got stabbed THROUGH THE HEART with a giant knife and didn’t die? How did Cam have a replica of the same mask Tom had? Did he steal it from evidence? Sarah never found out Dylan GAVE A SERIAL KILLER HER HAIR — what happened with that massive, INSANE betrayal?) that I decided right there and then I couldn’t watch the next season, as I had originally planned to do. I was ready to sit through all the show’s flaws because it was horror-y enough to get me in the spooky fall mood. 

Anyway… I’d skip. If anyone has any suggestions for fall shows, let me know.
