hot takes in horror

When I’m on a horror binge, I tend to watch things in groups. Yesterday, I watched (attempted to watch) three livestream horror movies.

The first, Deadstream (2022), was stupidly good — and so so stupid. Reminiscent of OG Evil Dead with special effects to match. It’s divisive, certainly, but absolutely worth the watch. I think the key to this film is not taking it seriously.

Ghosts falling down the stairs? Ghosts biting people’s crotches? Annoying streamers engaging with commenters, even when he’s about to die? An old lady giving urgent advice at a glacial speed? AND feminist ghost hotties? All paired with camp-y, disgusting effects? I couldn’t have asked for more.

As a r/horror loyal, I went to the comments to see what everyone else recommended. A few people said Spree (2020) was the best of the genre. Not only do I disagree, I HEARTILY do so. The acting in Spree was legitimately nearly unwatchable, with the exception of the main character. One person even called it “the best of this sub genre…” It had characters dumb enough to mistake a junk yard for a “once-in-a-lifetime experience,” a comedian final girl with the wooden acting skills of a sitcom actor, and MANY off-screen deaths. No thanks.

My final dishonorable mention is Dashcam (2021), which I legitimately could not finish. Not that the movie was bad, per se, but I hated the main character more than I’ve ever hated anyone in a film. If you want to be bored, exasperated, and pissed off, I would recommend this one.
